Fix the Foundation: Stopping Role Drift Before it Derails Your Team
Before you can coach performance, you have to define it. But in many organizations, the foundation is shaky: job roles blur over time, expectations go unspoken, and team members operate with very different ideas of what “good” looks like.

In this session, Joe Rotella, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, CPBA, goes beneath the surface of day-to-day performance to examine the structural drivers behind clarity and confusion. We’ll explore how organizational context , job design, KSAs, and defined success outcomes work together to align people with purpose. We’ll also look at how “role drift” sneaks in, especially in fast-paced or understaffed environments, and what HR and leaders can do to realign roles before performance issues take root.
Key Takeaways:
- Understand the role of organizational context in setting meaningful expectations
- Use job frameworks and KSAs to create clarity around responsibilities and results
- Identify early signs of role drift—and what to do about them
- Equip managers with tools to talk about performance in ways that are rooted in role, not personality
This session lays the groundwork for more effective coaching, feedback, and growth conversations. When the work is clear, performance becomes possible.
This program is pre-approved for 1 PDC for the SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP® and 1 CEU for the PHR® or SPHR®. A Certificate of Completion will be provided to each attendee within one week of the presentation.
